Nimbic Systems Receives FDA Clearance for Air Barrier System

Nimbic Systems announced today that it has received FDA clearance to market its new medical device, Air Barrier System^TM (ABS), designed to reduce surgical incision site contamination by infection causing microorganisms. ABS is the first device of its kind to create a highly localized zone of protective air at the surgical site during orthopedic joint replacement and revision procedures.

The Air Barrier System uses proprietary technology to create a “cocoon” of highly pure air that comprehensively surrounds the surgical incision. The effect of this cocoon is to isolate the incision from ambient air and to prevent the bacteria present in the operating room atmosphere from reaching the surgical site. The ABS is able to accomplish this without disrupting surgical procedures or impeding access to the incision area.

The Air Barrier System consists of two components: A non-sterile, reusable Blower unit that provides the source of HEPA filtered air; and a sterile, disposable Nozzle which is affixed onto the surgical drape near the incision. The Nozzle is designed to emit the HEPA filtered air over the surgery area, which shields the incision from airborne bacteria.

Bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, are continuously shed by operating room personnel into the air and subsequently precipitate onto the surgical site. These organisms cause the majority of infections in prosthesis implant surgeries, such as hip and knee replacements. Healthcare practitioners are now facing increased infection rates and exorbitant treatment costs in these types of procedures. These infection rates are exacerbated by factors such as increased antibiotic resistance and changing patient demographics.

The goal of the ABS technology is to prevent the initial intrusion of infection-causing organisms. In clinical trials, the Air Barrier System has been shown to reduce the presence of these microorganisms at incision sites by greater than 84%.

Nimbic Systems focuses on orthopedic surgery, featuring products for infection control and prevention, as well as products for patient positioning.

The GCMDM kicked off the Fall season with a very successful monthly meeting at Tietronix. Over thirty guests enjoyed a complementary lunch and received an introduction to the software and graphics products offered by Tietronix. Thanks to all the folks at Tietronix for hosting this meeting. The next monthly meeting will be October 14 at Life-Tech, Inc.
