Event Details:

The GCMDM has purchased a booth at the MD&M show in Fort Worth this coming March 14 – 15.

This investment allows all of our members and the capabilities of the region to be represented at the show. As space allows we will encourage member companies to provide sample products and company literature to be displayed. General admission to the show is $55. If you are a “captive” manufacturer that produces and sells a medical device entry to the show is at no cost. Please note that the show has a policy prohibiting attendees from solicitation of vendors.

We are offering the opportunity to work in the booth during the show at a price of $250. Work shifts will be equally allocated to those passes to cover the days of the show. While working in the booth , we will expect participants to represent not only the interests of their company, but also the interest of all members in the GCMDM community. If you would like to work in the booth during the show, please indicate your interest by notifying us at info@gcmdm.com

As you can imagine there will be many details regarding the show that we will need assistance with including:

Set up and tear down of booth
Booth (we have had a couple volunteered)
Graphics and decoration of booth
Coordination of member literature and samples
Delivery and return of member literature and samples to the show

We have also discussed the opportunity to share the booth space and cost with BioHouston, Houston Technology Center, and the GHP. We are actively working on collecting many of the details and will send more information as it becomes available. We are excited about the opportunity to represent the vast capabilities of our membership and strong network of professionals in our community to this industry exhibition and believe it will further enhance business opportunities for all of our membership and community.

Nimbic Systems Receives FDA Clearance for Air Barrier System

Nimbic Systems announced today that it has received FDA clearance to market its new medical device, Air Barrier System^TM (ABS), designed to reduce surgical incision site contamination by infection causing microorganisms. ABS is the first device of its kind to create a highly localized zone of protective air at the surgical site during orthopedic joint replacement and revision procedures.

The Air Barrier System uses proprietary technology to create a “cocoon” of highly pure air that comprehensively surrounds the surgical incision. The effect of this cocoon is to isolate the incision from ambient air and to prevent the bacteria present in the operating room atmosphere from reaching the surgical site. The ABS is able to accomplish this without disrupting surgical procedures or impeding access to the incision area.

The Air Barrier System consists of two components: A non-sterile, reusable Blower unit that provides the source of HEPA filtered air; and a sterile, disposable Nozzle which is affixed onto the surgical drape near the incision. The Nozzle is designed to emit the HEPA filtered air over the surgery area, which shields the incision from airborne bacteria.

Bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, are continuously shed by operating room personnel into the air and subsequently precipitate onto the surgical site. These organisms cause the majority of infections in prosthesis implant surgeries, such as hip and knee replacements. Healthcare practitioners are now facing increased infection rates and exorbitant treatment costs in these types of procedures. These infection rates are exacerbated by factors such as increased antibiotic resistance and changing patient demographics.

The goal of the ABS technology is to prevent the initial intrusion of infection-causing organisms. In clinical trials, the Air Barrier System has been shown to reduce the presence of these microorganisms at incision sites by greater than 84%.

Nimbic Systems focuses on orthopedic surgery, featuring products for infection control and prevention, as well as products for patient positioning.

Over thirty guests enjoyed a complementary lunch and received an introduction to the software and graphics products offered by Tietronix. Thanks to all the folks at Tietronix for hosting this meeting. The next monthly meeting will be October 14 at Life-Tech, Inc.

Board of Directors Mark Henrichs has spent more than 30 years in industrial research in the photographic, pharmaceutical and medical device industries. He holds an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Rice University and a PhD in chemistry from UCLA. His career accomplishments include multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications, industrial patents and experience with start-up companies. Most recently he was the Director of Technology Development at Fairway Medical Technology. While at Fairway he co-founded the Gulf Coast Medical Device Manufacturers, a community of local design, engineering and manufacturing companies working together to share opportunities and keep business related to medical devices in the region.
